hey netizens! i’m not sure how many people are aware, but youtube’s been slowly rolling out a new anti-adblock policy that can’t be bypassed with the usual software like uBlock Origin and Pi-Hole out of the gate

BUT, if you’re a uBlock Origin user (or use an adblocker with a similar cosmetics modifier), you can add these commands in the uBlock dashboard to get rid of it!

I slept in and just woke up, so here’s what I’ve been able to figure out while sipping coffee:

• Twitter has officially rebranded to X just a day or two after the move was announced.
• The official branding is that a tweet is now called “an X”, for which there are too many jokes to make.
• The official account is still @twitter because someone else owns @X and they didn’t reclaim the username first.
• The logo is 𝕏 which is the Unicode character Unicode U+1D54F so the logo cannot be copyrighted and it is highly likely that it cannot be protected as a trademark.
• Outside the visual logo, the trademark for the use of the name “X” in social media is held by Meta/Facebook, while the trademark for “X” in finance/commerce is owned by Microsoft.
• The rebranding has been stopped in Japan as the term “X Japan” is trademarked by the band X JAPAN.
• Elon had workers taking down the “Twitter” name from the side of the building. He did not have any permits to do this. The building owner called the cops who stopped the crew midway through so the sign just says “er”.
• He still plans to call his streaming and media hosting branch of the company as “Xvideo”. Nobody tell him.

I just laugh every time I open Twi–X to look at art and am reminded of how Musk really decided that the masterful gambit here would be to take marketability that people would kill for, ingrained in the language of millions for free, the term “tweeting”, and squash it in favor of “X”.

Btw, if you’re new to tumblr, or even if you’re not new to tumblr but don’t know, if there’s any little features that annoy you or QOL things you want, chances are you should download Xkit to more fine-tune customize your experience. Not sure if this is still common knowledge as it used to be, but it’s a great help.

For the unfamiliar: there are three extensions called XKit, for historical reasons. The one you want is called “XKit Rewritten”. It is a browser extended which can do many things to improve your Tumblr experience. One of my favourites is called “panorama”, which simply makes your dash actually use whatever horizontal space you give it, rather than occupying no more than the middle third of your screen and filling the rest with empty space for no good reason.

Since it is a browser extension, XKit is only useful for the browser version of the site, but it improves things so much that you may find you never want to use Tumblr Mobile ever again.

To add onto this even more, I actually use a combination of both “Newxkit” (which no longer updates, but still has some features I find too good to do without, like mouseover reblogs and other QOL tweaks) and “Xkit Rewritten”, which is a browser extension that allows you to, as said above, disable tumblr live.

For reference on how great xkit is though, I didn’t even know tumblr had changed its layout to try and look like The Devil’s Web because it’s like this

Xkit Rewritten now has mouseover reblogs as well! I swapped to Rewritten from New Xkit a little while ago when I got a new computer, and I don’t know if it matches up to EVERY feature, but it had a version of all the settings I had been using. Recommend!

It’s the best QOL feature outside of Fix-it features imo! Thanks for letting me know, I’ll see if I just need to update it to get it to show up for me.

(Edit) so it seems that the new tumblr layout is being rolled out in waves, so I may be lucky and haven’t goten hit yet… but! Xkit has been pretty consistent throughout all of its itterations in the past of fixing whatever unpopular change was put through and has undone past UI changes, so even if the new “haha we’re twitter fr guys” update does go through, for now xkit will still make it better, and there’s a very good chance xkit will largely undo/put things back with future updates if it follows the past model of the mods.
